Labor Nurse to Seattle Divorce Attorney: Amanda DuBois’ Story

So, how did I go from being a labor and delivery nurse to a Seattle divorce attorney?

Sounds like quite a stretch. But not really…

Somewhere along the way during my legal career it hit me. The process of going through a divorce is not all that different than being in labor. That’s why family law resonates with me. In both instances you are stuck in a process that you can’t stop. The baby (or the divorce) is coming. You are in crazy pain. You feel out of control. You need someone to help you. You have to figure out how to get strong. You need to find your power. At the same time you ask yourself: Will it ever end?

Here’s the difference between labor and a divorce: when you’re in labor you find strength in knowing that when it’s over you will have a beautiful baby. What most people don’t realize is that when the divorce is over, they will “give birth” to an amazing new life. It may not happen quickly. But it will happen.

Just last Sunday at church I ran into a former client. Her husband had left her when she was in treatment for advanced breast cancer. She cried in my office with a scarf covering her bald head. It doesn’t get any worse than that. And, she had just quit her job. Then her house wouldn’t sell due to the housing crash. And yet, here she was at church, a couple years after her divorce, (with a full head of curly hair), a big grin on her face and holding hands with a nice man. She held out her hand to show me a pretty diamond ring!

I’m not saying your goal is to remarry. My clients have embarked, post-divorce, on all kinds of exciting life adventures. New careers. Relocation to a cool new community. New friends. Amazing volunteer opportunities.

It will be over. I promise. Something fabulous is in store for you. But first you have to make it through “labor.” Let me be your guide. If you’d like to meet and talk about what you’re going through, please feel free to call me at (206) 547-1486.
